Immediately after AMEN, the priest and the faithful kneel down to sing or say this prayer to the Holy Spirit:
PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth! You are present everywhere and fill all things. Treasury of blessing and Giver of Life! Come and dwell within us. Cleanse us of every stain, and save our souls, O gracious Lord.

ANTIPHON: The heavens declare God’s glory and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us. Each day tells the story to the following day, and each night proclaims the message with understanding to the next night. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us. Their voice has resounded all over the earth, and their message to the utmost bounds of the earth. Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us.
Glory: Now and for ever: Only Begotten Son:
ANTIPHON 3: Oh Lord, in your strength the king shall rejoice, and in your salvation He shall greatly exalt.

TROPAR: Blessed are you, O Christ our God, for by the sending of your Holy Spirit you made wise men out of fishermen, and through them you caught all the world. O one and only True Lover of all people, glory to You.

VERSE 2: You have granted him his soul’s desire; you refused not the wish of his lips.

TROPAR: Blessed are you, O Christ our God, for by the sending of your Holy Spirit you made wise men out of fishermen, and through them you caught all the world. O one and only True Lover of all people, glory to You!

VERSE 3: You anticipated His coming with goodly blessings; you set upon his head a crown of precious stone.

TROPAR: Blessed are you, O Christ our God, for by the sending of your Holy Spirit you made wise men out of fishermen, and through them you caught all the world. O one and only True Lover of all people, glory to You!

Procession of Gospel – After priest says “Wisdom, stand aright” proceed with Verse 4.

EISODIKON: Be exalted in your strength, O Lord; we shall sing and chart psalms in praise of your mighty deeds.

TROPAR: Blessed are you, O Christ our God, for by the sending of your Holy Spirit you made wise men out of fishermen, and through them you caught all the world. O one and only True Lover of all people, glory to You!
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen.

KONDAK: When the Most High God descended and confused the tongues of peoples, he divided all the nations. But when he imparted the tongues of fire, he called all to unity. And so with one accord, let us glorify his most Holy Spirit.

Instead of “Holy God”: All you have been baptized into Christ, you have put on Christ. Alleluia (3).
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen. You have put on Christ. Alleluia. All you have been baptized into Christ, you have put on Christ. Alleluia.

PROKIMEN: Their voice has resounded all over the earth, and their message to the utmost bounds of the world.
VERSE: The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament proclaims the work of His hands.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (2:1-11)
Brethren, when the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At the sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.

ALLELUIA: By the word of the Lord, the heavens were established, by the breathe of His mouth all the countless stars. Alleluia (3).
STICHOS: From the heavens the Lord looks down; He caringly sees all of us.
Alleluia (3). (Over.)

Gospel John 7:37-52 & 8:12

On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: ‘Rivers of living water will flow from within him.’” He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. Some in the crowd who heard these words said, “This is truly the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But others said, “The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David’s family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not bring him?” The guards answered, “Never before has anyone spoken like this one.” So the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed.” Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, “Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?” They answered and said to him, “You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” Then each went to his own house, while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, (and) from now on do not sin any more.” Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Instead of “It is Truly Right”: Extol, my soul, the one divine God in three persons. Irmos: Rejoice, Queen, glory of virgins and mothers; for even the most eloquent and cultured tongues fall short of extolling you worthily, and every mind reels with amazement from the way in which you gave birth. And so, with one accord, we glorify you.

COMMUNION VERSE: Your good Spirit shall guide me on the straight path. We pray you, one and only true Lover of all people: take not your Holy Spirit away from us. Alleluia (3).

IT STAGGERS THE MIND
It is said that Blessed Augustine (354-430), a leader in the early Western Church, was walking on the ocean shore one day pondering the mystery of the Trinity. He saw a little boy who was playing with a seashell. The youngster scooped a hole in the sand, then went down to the waves and filled his shell with water and poured it into the hole he had made. Blessed Augustine asked: “What are you doing?” The boy replied: “I am going to pour the sea into the hole.” That led Blessed Augustine, thinking: “That is what I have been trying to do. Standing at the ocean of infinity, I have attempted to grasp it with my finite mind.”
The concept of the Holy Trinity does not fit the framework of common logic, nor can it be fully analyzed by our intellect. But this is no reason to say it is an invention of theologians. To declare that the one and only God has made Himself known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is simply an attempt to define what the Scriptures teach. “I and my Father are one.” John 10:30. “After that the Holy Spirit is come upon you.” Acts 1:8. ”
And when Jesus was baptized, He went straightway out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him: and a Voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matt 3:16- 17) To commit our lives to this triune God is to begin to see with the eye of faith His greatness as our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Doesn’t it make sense that the One we worship and to Whom we entrust our lives should be vastly greater than our limited understanding.

The candle before the icon of St. Nicholas for the month of May will burn for Benjamin Placek who celebrates his tenth birthday this month.
